Loss of Trust
One of the most hurtful forms of loss is a loss of trust and the feeling of betrayal. Trust is a hard thing to build with someone, and when that person breaks your trust, it can be hard to feel safe trusting another person the same way again. This causes many people to feel guarded when creating a new relationship with someone or trying to repair an old relationship. This applies for romantic relationships, friendships, coworkers, and even family relationships.
“The Wife’s Story” by Ursula Le Guin is a prime example of this betrayal and loss of trust. The story opens with the wife describing how her spouse was a good husband and father and how she cannot believe what happened even though she saw it herself. The story does not initially explain the incident the wife is discussing, instead it describes how she had suspicions and her children noticed changes with the husband as well overtime. Eventually we learn that the family is a pack of wolves and the husband is turning into a human. This scares the wife and pack as they view humans as hateful and a threat due to hunters and guns killing some of them. This then results in the pack killing the man, leaving the wife questioning her marriage in the end. This loss of trust can be connected to cheaters and how being cheated on can make you question the integrity of your entire relationship leading up to that point.
Universal Studio’s popular franchise How to Train your Dragon shows a different form of betrayal one can experience. This betrayal came in a side TV show called Dragons: Race to the Edge where the main gang of dragon riders adventure and fight dragon hunters over the course of 6 seasons. During the show it is revealed that a fan favorite from two previous series in the franchise has been betraying the main characters and working as a double agent for the dragon hunters. This betrayal leads the main character, Hiccup, to question everything and feel guilt due to him not realizing he was being double crossed.
Both of these show a form of betrayal from someone they trusted. With the wife feeling betrayed by her husband and Hiccup feeling betrayed by one of his confidants. These show how betrayal can happen from anyone, despite how close you felt to them. "The Wife's Story" shows how sometimes you can never really know someone despite having a relationship for years whether it be romantic, family, or friendship. While the betrayal in "Race to the Edge" shows how there are some things best kept private and if you share those things with someone that betrays you it can have catastrophic consequences.
These both resonate with me because I see many stories of cheaters or people finding out that someone they trusted lied to them and it can be scary not knowing whether or not you can trust someone. For example, Netflix has many documentaries of serial killers that were actually family men and the people they knew in the community would have never guessed they were capable of killing someone. This creates the idea of "you can never really know a person" which has causes me to be skeptical of everyone when making new friends. I also have been betrayed by past relationships and friendships that have made it hard to open up to others overtime so I do feel this loss more than others. Because of these, you should always trust your gut around people and if something feels off with a friend or relationship, listen to it and be careful moving forward.
